How do gates work?

Each gate adds to or multiplies your squad. Shooting a gate raises its number by one per volley, so even a red gate can be shot back to positive.

Does the game get harder if I watch fewer ads?

No. A level's difficulty depends only on its number. It never depends on you or on ads, and a retry is always the same layout.
